At least 7 REI stalls showed a 125 kW, 261 kWh battery. Ask which job it does
By our count of trade-press reports from REI Expo 2026 in Greater Noida, at least 7 stalls showed a battery system of the same size: 125 kW and 261 kWh. They most likely match because 260 of today's common 314 Ah cells add up to 261 kWh. So stop comparing the box, and ask which job it is built for: cutting peak-hour charges, using your solar after sunset, or keeping the site running in a power cut.
What happened125 kW, 261 kWh battery cabinets at REI Expo 2026, Greater Noida
Renewable Energy India Expo 2026 ran from 22 to 24 October at India Expo Mart, Greater Noida. On battery storage, two trade-press reports show one size again and again. TaiyangNews's live blog from the show, read on 24 October, describes six exhibitors displaying or showcasing a battery energy storage system (BESS) for business and industry rated 125 kW and 261 kWh, and one more promoting a range that includes one. On 24 October, Energetica India reported on a 125 kW / 261 kWh system from another exhibitor at the show.
By our count of those two reports, at least 7 stalls showed a system of exactly that size, and an eighth listed one in its range. The reports do not cover every stall, so this is a floor, not a full count. We walked the halls on 22 and 23 October; the count here comes from the reports, not from our own notes.
kW and kWh are two different things. kW is how much power the box can give at once, like the width of a tap. kWh is how much it stores, like the size of the tank. A 125 kW, 261 kWh cabinet can run a 125 kW load for about 2 hours in theory, before losses (261 divided by 125 is 2.09, our arithmetic), or a smaller load for longer.
The boxes most likely match because the cells inside them do. TaiyangNews notes that one of them uses 314 Ah cells. Ah, or amp-hours, is how much charge a cell holds. Each 314 Ah lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cell, at 3.2 volts, holds about 1 kWh, and 260 of them make 261 kWh: 260 x 314 Ah x 3.2 V = 261.2 kWh, our arithmetic. In May 2025, the research firm InfoLink expected 314 Ah models to go from 39.2 per cent of the market in 2024 to over 75 per cent in 2025. That was a forecast, and the report does not say which market it measured.
| Job | What the box does | What to check on the quote |
|---|---|---|
| Cut peak-hour charges | Charges in normal hours and runs the site in the dearer hours | Which months and hours your tariff makes dearer. In Punjab, 6 to 10 pm, 16 Jun to 15 Oct only, for bigger connections |
| Use your solar after sunset | Charges from midday solar the site cannot use, and runs the site in the evening | How it connects to the solar you already have |
| Keep running in a power cut | Takes over the site's chosen loads when the grid fails | A transfer switch and a backup mode, both named in writing |
Our own summary, not from the reports; the Punjab hours and months are from our 14 October story. One cabinet can sometimes do more than one job, if it is set up for each, so ask which jobs the quote covers.
What our tracker showsIndia's home rooftop solar, and the hours after sunset
Our tracker counts home rooftops under PM Surya Ghar, the national rooftop scheme, and nothing else. It cannot see factory batteries, and the portal's public figures do not show home batteries either. So the counter says nothing about what was on show at REI, and we do not read anything into it.
What it does show is how much solar now sits on India's home roofs. On the 24 October reading, India had 53,82,279 home rooftops under the scheme, with 18,759 MW of panels, up from 16,057 MW on our first reading, 29 August. In the week from the 17 October reading, the counter added 91,561 rooftops and about 294 MW, about 3.2 kW for each new rooftop, our arithmetic. Punjab had 21,138 rooftops with 96.8 MW.
All of those panels make power only while the sun is up. After sunset, the homes run on grid power, or on a battery if they have one. That is the second job in this story, using your solar after sunset, at home scale. For a factory, the same job means holding midday solar it cannot use or export at the time, and a cabinet like the ones at REI is one way to do it.

What it could mean for IndiaWhen every battery box is the same size, what to compare
When at least 7 stalls show the same size of box, the size may no longer tell one offer from another. What could still differ is what the buyer gets: which job the system is set up for, how it connects to the site, how much power it uses itself, and what the warranty promises in writing.
The common size may not stay put. InfoLink said in its May 2025 report that “300Ah+ cells have become the mainstream for large-capacity storage”, and that leading makers were planning mass production of cells of 500 Ah and more by the end of 2025. If bigger cells catch on, the standard cabinet could change size again. A buyer who compares by job may not need to start again when it does.
Which job pays could depend more on the state's tariff than on the box. In Punjab, the evening surcharge for factories above 50 kVA and large commercial connections runs only from 16 June to 15 October, so a box bought only to cut peak-hour charges could earn that way for about 4 months of the year, as our 14 October story sets out. In Jammu and Kashmir, peak hours of 6 to 9 am and 5 to 10 pm apply all year for connections above 10 kW of sanctioned load, except farms, wherever the meter records time of use, so the same job may pay in every month there. If Punjab's next tariff order moved toward the central government's time of day rules from 2023, with a dearer evening all year and a cheaper midday, the answer for Punjab could change too.
Where power cuts are long, as in Punjab's paddy-season shortfall in September, keeping the site running could be the job that matters most. A factory's on-grid solar switches off when the grid does, so in a cut only a battery set up for backup, or a generator, can carry the load. For a battery to do that, it needs two things. One is a transfer switch, which moves the site's loads from the grid to the battery when the grid fails; datasheets often call it an STS. The other is a backup mode in its controls. Not every cabinet comes with both, so two boxes of the same size could behave very differently on the day the grid goes down.
What it means for youBattery storage for factories: four lines to check on every quote
If you are comparing battery quotes for a factory: check four lines on every quote. One, which job the system is for, from the three in the table above, ticked in writing. Two, how it connects to the solar you already have, and whether your present solar inverter can work with it. Three, how much power its own cooling and controls use, while running and while idle; that power comes out of what the battery saves you. Four, cycles (how many full charges and discharges it is rated for), round-trip efficiency and warranty, in writing. Round-trip efficiency is how many units come back out for every 100 you put in. Ask whether the figure is measured at the battery (DC) or on the AC side, where the system connects to your site (AC), which also counts the losses in the inverter.
Here is what lines three and four can look like in a catalogue. The UnityESS Aqua 4 we sell is this same 125 kW / 261 kWh size, built from 260 cells of 314 Ah, all in one chain. Its catalogue lists 2.63 kW for its own systems while operating and 0.05 kW while idle, a life of 8,000 cycles, and a round-trip efficiency above 94 per cent measured on the DC side, at the battery. Solentra sells battery storage for business and industry, Powered by UnityESS, and our BESS calculator asks about your site, your solar and your tariff before it works out a payback.
If your site is in Punjab: check your tariff category and the months before you buy a battery to cut peak-hour charges. The evening surcharge covers factories above 50 kVA and large commercial connections, and only from 16 June to 15 October, so there is none now. This year's tariff order runs to 31 March 2027, and the next one could keep or change the calendar; our time of day tariff story has the details. In Jammu and Kashmir, check whether your bill already shows time of day rates, because that depends on the meter.
If you want a battery for power cuts: say so in your enquiry, and ask for the transfer switch and the backup mode by name in the quote, with the time the switch-over takes. Ask which loads it will carry and for how long, and ask for the usable kWh, which can be lower than the rated figure. A 261 kWh cabinet at its full 125 kW lasts about 2 hours before losses; at a lower load it lasts longer.
If you are an installer or an EPC firm: an EPC firm designs and builds the plant for its client. Put the job on the first page of every storage quote, and if the customer wants backup, show the transfer switch and the backup mode as their own lines. Ask the maker for the own-use figures, the cycle life, the round-trip efficiency with DC or AC marked, and the warranty terms in writing, before you compare offers. When the boxes match, those lines and your service may be what a customer compares.
If you are a homeowner: these cabinets are built for business and industry and are far bigger than a home needs, but the first question is the same. Ask which job a home battery is for. A plain on-grid rooftop system switches off in a power cut, so backup needs a hybrid inverter, which can run the house from a battery, or an all-in-one unit with a battery built in. You can follow the scheme's Punjab numbers every day on our tracker.
