What a rooftop solar system actually costs in Punjab, after subsidy.
Most pages answering this question are calculators run by people who do not sell solar. We are a distributor in Mohali, so these are the numbers we work with — and we will also tell you, plainly, when solar is not worth buying in Punjab at all.
Price by system size, before and after subsidy
Installed cost for a grid-connected rooftop system in Punjab, including structure, wiring, net metering and paperwork. The PM Surya Ghar subsidy is paid into your bank account after commissioning — it is not deducted from the invoice, so the gross figure is what you pay first.

Generation assumes roughly 1,460 units per kW per year, which is a fair average for Punjab’s irradiance across a full year. Above 10 kW the residential subsidy does not apply. Punjab adds no state subsidy on top of the central one.
Before you buy: the 300 free units question
This is the part most quotations leave out, and it decides the whole thing.
Punjab gives domestic consumers 300 free units a month. If your household sits under that, your electricity bill is already at or near zero — and solar cannot save you money you are not spending. The payback is not long in that case, it is undefined. We would rather say that now than after you have paid for a system.
Rooftop solar is worth buying in Punjab if you:
- regularly cross 300 units a month, particularly with air conditioning through the summer;
- have a commercial or industrial connection, where no free allowance applies and tariffs are higher;
- run an agricultural or mixed-load connection;
- want backup through outages, in which case the value is reliability rather than payback;
- are building now and want the structure done once, correctly, rather than retrofitted later.
It is also worth knowing that this is visible in the national data. Punjab converts applications into commissioned systems better than Haryana, Rajasthan or Gujarat — the installers here do their job — but Punjab files roughly a seventh of Haryana’s applications. Far fewer households start, and the free-units threshold is the most plausible reason why.

How the subsidy is calculated
PM Surya Ghar pays by slab, not by percentage:
- ₹30,000 per kW for the first 2 kW
- ₹18,000 for the third kW
- capped at ₹78,000, so 3 kW and 10 kW receive the same amount
Which is why 3 kW is the most common residential size in Punjab: it is the smallest system that collects the full subsidy. Going larger buys you more generation, not more subsidy. The subsidy explained in full.
What moves the price on a real roof
- Structure. A flat RCC roof is straightforward. An elevated structure over a courtyard, parking or water tank costs more in steel than the panels save in a year.
- Shading. A neighbouring block or a water tank shading part of the array changes the layout and sometimes the inverter choice.
- Sanctioned load and phase. PSPCL normally sanctions up to your existing load. A single-phase connection limits you; upgrading has its own cost and timeline.
- Cable run. Distance from the array to the meter is real copper.
- Panel and inverter choice. ALMM-listed panels and a BIS-certified inverter are not optional — material outside those lists fails inspection and cannot claim subsidy at all.

It makes sense if you regularly cross 300 units, run air conditioning through the summer, have a commercial or agricultural connection, or want backup during outages.
How long does a solar system take to pay for itself in Punjab?
For a household consistently above the free-units threshold, a 3 kW system generating roughly 4,300 units a year usually pays back its post-subsidy cost in about three to four years. Below that threshold there is no payback to calculate, because there is no bill being offset.
Does the price include net metering and paperwork?
Ours does: the PSPCL net metering application, the PM Surya Ghar registration and the commissioning report that releases your subsidy. Ask any supplier to confirm that in writing — an installation that is never commissioned by a registered vendor cannot claim the subsidy at all.
