Questions people ask
Frequently asked questions
How many electric vehicles were sold in India in 2026?
Vahan shows 27,98,354 electric vehicles registered in India in 2026 up to 26 Oct 2026, counted at 10:15. Registrations are the closest public count of sales.
How many of every 100 new vehicles in India are electric?
From January to September 2026, 10.7 of every 100 new vehicles registered in India were electric: 25,37,802 of 2,37,76,952. In the same months of 2025 it was 8.6 of every 100.
Which state registers the most electric vehicles?
Uttar Pradesh registered the most from January to September 2026: 3,57,231. Next came Maharashtra with 2,85,962 and Karnataka with 2,32,343. The table above lists every state and UT.
Which electric vehicles sell the most in India?
Scooters and motorcycles: 62 of every 100 EVs registered from January to September 2026. Next came autos and three wheel goods carriers with 13 of every 100, and e-rickshaws with 11.
Why do the latest months keep rising?
Many vehicles are entered on Vahan days or weeks after they are bought, so a month's count keeps rising for a few weeks after it ends. Comparisons on this page use finished months only, and a month counts as finished from the 5th of the next month.
Are hybrid cars counted?
No. Only battery electric vehicles are counted: the Vahan fuel types ELECTRIC(BOV) and PURE EV. Strong hybrids, plug-in hybrids, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles and solar vehicles are left out.
Where do these numbers come from?
From the Vahan dashboard of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. Solentra counts them from the dashboard, and every page shows its count date. Solentra is not part of the Ministry.
About these numbers
- Only battery electric vehicles are counted: the Vahan fuel types ELECTRIC(BOV) and PURE EV, added together. Strong hybrids, plug-in hybrids, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles and solar vehicles are left out.
- These are registrations. A vehicle is counted in the month it was registered, in the state of the transport office that registered it.
- Recent months can still rise by about 1 in every 100 as late registrations arrive. The current month is a count so far and is never compared.
- Low speed electric scooters that need no registration are not on Vahan, so they are not in these counts.
- The figures come from the Vahan dashboard (vahan4dashboard). The newer Vahan analytics dashboard counts only vehicles still on the road, so its numbers differ and the two are never mixed here.
- Vehicle types come from each state's own tables of vehicle classes, so a state's types can differ from its count by a few vehicles. India's types are the sum of the states' types.
- Diwali was on 20 Oct 2025 and is on 8 Nov 2026. Vehicle registrations jump around the festival, so October and November can look very different from one year to the next.
- Changes, "of every 100" figures, ranks and vehicle types use finished months only. A month counts as finished from the 5th of the next month, and every state and UT uses the same months, so they add up to India.
Notes on some states
- Telangana moved onto central Vahan in February and March 2026. Its earlier months were added later and may be incomplete. So both years' counts are shown, but no change is worked out between them. India's totals include Telangana's counts as Vahan shows them.
- One of Rajasthan's transport offices does not report to the Vahan dashboard, so the vehicles it registers are not in these counts.
- West Bengal registered far more e-rickshaws than usual from November 2025 to February 2026: 26,778 in December 2025, against about 2,071 a month from January to October 2025. Changes that cover those months are larger than usual.
- The newest months of Telangana may still rise as autos, cabs and goods vehicles are added.
Down To Earth and the Centre for Science and Environment report that Vahan undercounts electric rickshaws. We print Vahan's counts as they are.
