1 in 2 new heavy trucks sold in China in September was electric
Electrek reports that electric trucks were 50.3 per cent of the heavy trucks sold in China in September 2026, against 28.9 per cent across 2025. For years people argued over whether electric heavy trucks could work at all, but a heavy truck runs all day, and when a machine works that hard, running cost can beat purchase price. In India, electric trucks are still fewer than 1 of every 100 heavy goods vehicles registered this year.
What happenedChina's heavy trucks, from 14 in every 100 to about 50 in two years
On 2 November 2026, Electrek reported that “Electric trucks made up 50.3% of all heavy trucks sold in China in September.” That is 33,100 electric trucks of 12 tonnes and up, out of about 65,800 sold in the month (the total is our arithmetic). Electrek puts the rise in electric sales at 37 per cent on a year earlier, while all heavy truck sales fell 21 per cent, so part of the jump is diesel and gas trucks selling less. Among long-haul tractors, electric reached 64.5 per cent.
The climb has been quick, and not smooth. Electric was 13.6 per cent of sales in 2024 and 28.9 per cent in 2025, and January to September 2026 came to 2,26,400 trucks, or 38.1 per cent. It touched 53.9 per cent in December 2025, in a rush before trade-in subsidies ended, and then fell to about 23 per cent by March. So one month does not show where the share settles.
Why it happened is mostly about the cost of running a truck. Electrek says electric heavy trucks in China are now cheaper to own and run than diesel in most uses. It cites a study by ICCT and CATARC that put them about 19 per cent cheaper per tonne-kilometre in good conditions, and it notes that the advantage disappears at low yearly mileage, or when battery weight cuts what the truck can carry. Battery swapping helps too: one maker's standard packs of 432 kWh or 513 kWh can be changed in about five minutes at stations along freight routes. A diesel price spike in spring 2026, tied to the Iran war, pushed some fleets the same way, though Electrek says that explains only part of the change. CleanTechnica adds that these gains came after subsidies were cut.
China's own goal, set by 11 government bodies and reported by CnEVPost, is 40 per cent by 2030. One thing to keep apart: this is what is being sold, not what is on the road. Kpler, an energy data firm quoted by Electrek, expects electric trucks to be only about 8 per cent of China's heavy trucks on the road by the end of 2026.
| Where | Electric, of every 100 sold | Period and measure |
|---|---|---|
| China | About 38 | Jan to Sep 2026, 12 tonnes and up. September alone: about 50 |
| European Union | 2.5 | Jan to Sep 2026, 16 tonnes and up |
| United States | Well under 1 | Class 8 trucks, Electrek's estimate |
| India | About 0.7 | Jan to Sep 2026, heavy goods vehicles |
China, the EU and the US from Electrek, 2 November 2026. India is our arithmetic from the Vahan dashboard, read 21 to 24 October 2026: 1,762 of 2,59,113, battery electric only. China's figures are new-energy trucks. Each place counts trucks a little differently, so read these as rough sizes, not a league table.
What our tracker showsIndia's electric heavy goods vehicles, from our Vahan data
Our EV tracker reads the government's Vahan dashboard every day, and on the 4 November reading India stood at 29,22,846 electric vehicles registered so far in 2026. Most of those are two and three wheelers. For this story we went to our fuller Vahan data, which splits registrations by vehicle type.
From January to September 2026, India registered 1,762 electric heavy goods vehicles out of 2,59,113 heavy goods vehicles of all fuels. That is about 7 of every 1,000, or fewer than 1 of every 100. A year earlier it was 277 of 2,08,368, so the count has grown more than six times, from a very small base.
It is also lumpy, and it sits in one place. August 2026 alone had 825, nearly half of the nine months. Maharashtra had 1,302 of the 1,762. Haryana had 77 of 30,180, and Punjab none of its 5,222. The dashboard does not say who bought them or why, so we read nothing more into those figures.

What it could mean for IndiaWhen running cost starts to beat purchase price
China's lesson could travel: when a machine works all day, its running cost can start to outweigh its purchase price. The same sum applies to much of what we sell, because a factory's solar and battery are also bought to cut a running bill, and how hard they work decides how fast they pay back. We are not forecasting that India follows China; its truck prices, routes, loads and charging are all different.
If electric trucks do spread in India, the place they stop for hours could matter more than the road. Depots and factory yards with big roofs could charge them on daytime solar, and a battery there could hold that power for a night shift. That could also add a large new load on a site's connection, so a business would need to look at its sanctioned load first. This is a possibility, not something our data shows today.
India's numbers may stay small for a while. China built swap stations along its freight routes as sales grew, and the advantage there disappears at low yearly mileage or when battery weight cuts what the truck can carry. A truck that does not run enough kilometres might never earn back a higher price, so the case for each truck is likely to rest on its own route.
What it means for youWork out what a machine costs to run, not only to buy
If you run trucks, tippers or any machine that works all day: write down what it costs to run in a month, in fuel and upkeep, next to what it costs to buy. Then ask what would change that sum. The same habit works for a diesel generator or a factory's power bill.
If you sell solar or batteries to factories and warehouses: lead with the running bill, not the price tag. Ask how many hours the machines run, what the generator burns and what the bill is for the hours that matter. Our BESS calculator works from those answers to a payback, and our battery storage page, Powered by UnityESS, covers the systems.
